Climate change is a vitally important issue. Over the past few years there has been a quiet but growing consensus about the dramatic pace of climate change and its devastating impacts. Many destinations are already reeling from its effects. Not only is climate change a significant risk for Travel & Tourism, the risk is greatest in countries where tourism growth is projected to be strongest.
Given the importance of Travel & Tourism to the world economy, the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the growing imperative to address climate change in a meaningful way, WTTC and United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) have joined forces to publish a Common Agenda, towards a carbon neutral world with the aim of:
1. Communicating the nature and importance of the interlinkages between T&T and climate change
2. Raising awareness of the positive contribution T&T can make to building climate resilience
3. Reducing the contribution of T&T to climate change
WTTC and UNFCCC will initiate a sector-wide dialogue on climate action in the T&T sector, bringing together industry leaders, climate experts and others to ‘look over the horizon’ to identify how the sector can contribute to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, and to develop cooperation models under UNFCCC to facilitate such action.
WTTC is also a signatory to UNFCCC Climate Neutral Now initiative and is committed to becoming climate neutral by 2050, as enshrined in the Paris Agreement.
WTTC has been actively engaged in climate change conversations since 2009 when the Council set out a comprehensive framework for the sector and set an aspirational target of reducing total carbon emissions by no less than 50% by 2035 with an interim target of 30% by 2020 with a follow up report issued in 2015.
